Perfect childhood reminder
Once upon a time, I was a little girl in primary school with
big dreams. I wanted to become someone important in future and this dream woke
me up every single day. From Lukhokwe primary school to Lugulu boarding primary
school to The Kenya High school all the way to University of Nairobi there has
always been a silent sometimes spoken dream in me. The urge to make it in life,
to be the change I want to be, make my parents proud, to stand out and to be a
leader in my own way has never left my side. I feel like I am on the right
track especially after landing my first attachment after campus with CCRP
(Collaborative Crop Research Program).
This is the perfect first time job for me, all other factors
aside; it takes me back to where my dreams started (primary school) and how I
grew up (with farmers). It is exciting to wake up each morning knowing I am
going to meet new pupils and new farmers somewhere along the day. The constant
reminder of how far I have come and how much I need to motivate the pupils I
meet is in itself my motivation during this attachment period.
Well, I realize how far back primary school is every day I
go out to the field to do a survey. The
expectant look from primary school kids takes me back more than 11 years ago. My
first day out in the field at Kahuho Primary School in Trans Nzoia County was a wake-up call for me. For the first time after a long while, I was tasked with
motivating class 7 pupils. Normally this would mean telling them to work hard
be disciplined and pass exams but on this particular day in this particular
program I felt like I needed to do much more than just telling them to work
hard.
This feeling of wanting to do more today than just talking
to pupils dates back to my days in Lugulu Boarding Primary School. Back then in
Lugulu and before that in Lukhokhwe primary school, I used to confidently stand
before my classmates and teach them mathematics and science. It was a sort of
passion for me and the classmates that I ever taught mathematics always used to
tell me my explanations were much clearer and simpler to understand.
So on this particular day the mind picture of me teaching my
classmates more than 11 years back came right back. I thought to myself, I used
to do it very well back then at that age, how about today when I am much older,
having gone through all these stages and being a testimony that everyone can be
what they want to be? Through motivating these students I realized that I too
got more empowered. I want to do more and achieve better, I want to make
someone go for nothing but excellence because it is all possible. I want to
give hope to young girls and boys that hard work truly pays. I believe on this
day I motivated at least one soul and that one soul will strive to make their
dreams come true.
That applies to all of us, our targets are reachable if we focus.
