Things that go a long way

My uncle's birthday today reminds me so much of my childhood years.I grew up in the village, it inspired me into who Iam today and am proud of it infact back then when i was still a little girl i was the village darling.. I mean everybody knew me as 'mtoto wa madam'. I used to sell bananas to my neighbours and even those who had planted their's still bought mine because of the charming smile I offered. Given a chance now i would do the same thing all over, too bad we cant reverse years.
Back to my uncle, he is one of the nicest relatives anyone would have. Having an uncle as a facebook friend who sees everything you post ranging from 'hot' photos to tennagehood insults and he still finds you adorable and doesnt report any of them is quite something keeping in mind he is nowhere near your age bracket. Those uncles you would tell anything comfortably without fearing that they would judge you or scold you, thats uncle Nelson for me.
His birthday reminds me of many years ago when news of him visiting us was something to always look forward to. Usually he would visit together with my other uncle and back then in the '90s any two vehicles seen one after the other in our village had one particular destination...home.There were no mobile phones then so the easiest way to know uncle was visiting was to keep watching incase you see any two cars approaching. This used to give me some internal joy I cant explain upto now. The kind of joy Fridays give you or maybe how you feel when you land a new job keeping in mind the number of people interviewed, something close to that feeling. We did not have so much to talk about with him apart from how school was, which high school i wanted to join and what i wanted to become when i grow up. The one thing i really used to look forward to was that he would never visit without sweets for me. Those sweets practically made me work hard at school. He would offer them only after finding out which position I was.
Today I look back at how i used to feel whenever he visited and it makes me want to give the same experience to my nephews and nieces. We all have different strenghts but the little things you say or do to people especially kids go a long long way. More than 10 years now and am still grateful. Happy birthday.
